Het drama was groot toen de verantwoordelijke BBC managers er twee weken geleden achter kwamen dat al hun originele opnames van 11 september 2001 uit het archief waren ... ehrm ... verdwenen. Het gebeurt immers maar zelden dat de archiveringsprocedures bij een staatsomroep zo falen, dat drie backups op drie verschillende plaatsen in lucht verdwijnen veranderen. Nader onderzoek brengt de BBC heuglijk nieuws: de backup is namelijk gevonden! Op een Torrent site.
Een van onze de medewerkers was zeer geschrokken door het nieuws. Want de beschikbaarheid van informatie is in dit digitale tijdperk een zorgenkindje. Een ongeluk zit immers in een klein hoekje! En als dan zelfs een staatsomroep door zo'n noodlot wordt getroffen, dat hun eigen archief niet veilig meer is, dan is het maar wat fijn dat de Torrent gemeenschap hen te hulp komt.
Op het BBC forum werd de vondst als volgt aangekondigd:
Dear BBC,It was with great regret that I heard you misplaced all three of your backups of the news video of 9/11, surely one of the most historic days since WW2.
I'm so very happy I'd like to inform you that you can get it back through a Swedish site called thepiratebay.org

Imagine the loss of such a historic document!
Data-retention policies aside you guys rock! Keep on reporting the news before it happens!
